Alfred Nobel and the History of Dynamite

The Nobel prizes  were established by none other than inventor Alfred Nobel (1833–1896). But besides being the namesake behind  one of the most prestigious awards given annually for academic, cultural and scientific achievements, Nobel is also well-known for making it possible for people to blow things up.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Before all that, however, the Swedish  industrialist, engineer, and inventor  built bridges and buildings in his nations capital Stockholm. It was his construction work that inspired Nobel to research new methods of blasting rock. So in 1860, Nobel first started experimenting with an explosive chemical substance called  nitroglycerin. Nitroglycerin and Dynamite Nitroglycerin was first invented by Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero (1812–1888) in 1846. In its natural liquid state, nitroglycerin is very volatile. Nobel understood this and in 1866 discovered that mixing nitroglycerin with silica would turn the liquid into a malleable paste called dynamite. One advantage that dynamite had over nitroglycerin was that it could be cylinder-shaped for insertion into the drilling holes used for mining. In 1863, Nobel invented the Nobel patent detonator or blasting cap for detonating nitroglycerin. The  detonator used a strong shock rather than heat combustion to ignite the explosives. The Nobel Company built the first factory to manufacture nitroglycerin and dynamite. In 1867, Nobel received U.S. patent number 78,317 for his invention of dynamite. To be able to detonate the dynamite rods, Nobel also improved his detonator (blasting cap) so that it could be ignited by lighting a fuse.  In 1875, Nobel invented blasting gelatin, which was more stable and powerful than dynamite  and patented it in 1876. In 1887, he was granted a French patent for  ballistite, a smokeless  blasting powder  made from nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. While Ballistite was developed as a substitute for black gunpowder, a variation is used today as a  solid fuel rocket propellant. Biography On October 21, 1833, Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His family moved to St. Petersburg in Russia when he was nine years old. Nobel prided himself on the many countries he lived in during his lifetime and considered himself a world citizen. In 1864, Albert Nobel founded Nitroglycerin AB in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1865, he built the Alfred Nobel Co. Factory in Krà ¼mmel near Hamburg, Germany. In 1866, he established the United States Blasting Oil Company in the U.S. In 1870, he established the Socià ©tà © gà ©nà ©ral pour la fabrication de la dynamite in Paris, France. When he died in 1896, Nobel  stipulated the year before in his last will and testament that 94% of his total assets should go toward the creation of an endowment fund to honor achievements in  physical science, chemistry, medical science or physiology, literary work and service toward peace.  Hence, the Nobel prize is awarded yearly to people whose work helps humanity. In total, Alfred Nobel held 355 patents in the fields of electrochemistry, optics, biology, and physiology. Sources and Further Reading Bown, Stephen R. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings By Maya Angelou Analysis

There is one person that is a civil rights activist, memoirist, a poet and above all a woman, this person is none other than Maya Angelou. Angelou has been a famous American poet since the release of her 1969 autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Angelou has inspired many people by telling her life story to the public, but not only did she inspire, she also created a very different and personal point of view of the world we live in. The poem’s she has written transition from pain and suffering or to courage and confidence. Nonetheless, even though Angelou wrote mostly about anguished emotions due to her past relations, her poetry expresses what she cannot demonstrate through actions but by using words. In other words,†¦show more content†¦In Alone Angelou wrote about mankind suffering due to selfishness for example, she writes, â€Å"They’ve got expensive doctors to cure their heart of stone. But nobody no, nobody can make it out here alone.â⠂¬ , Angelou compares our hearts to stone and even though we may have doctors to cure us, we will always be selfish in our own way making it troublesome for us to get out of the habit of thinking about ourselves. This stanza is truthful in its own right, we humans are selfish due to greed and when Angelou uses the phrases along the lines of â€Å"we cant make it out here alone†, it just shows that we have no one to blame but ourselves if certain situations end up atrocious. To prove my point more, in the second to the last stanza she writes, â€Å"The wind is gonna blow, the race of man is suffering†, this shows that Angelou saw the change in people, that we cause chaos, that we drive not only ourselves but others mad causing everyone to be self-absorbed. Alone is a powerful poem that makes people reflect on themselves and their actions. Even though Angelou wrote about anguished poems like Alone and Caged Bird, she did however write about equality and confidence. This poem that is about equality is Human Family. One such example of this was in Maya Angelous I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in which she used certain types of language to characterize herself when she was younger and the society that she grew up in. Her choice of language used in the end of Chapter 16 helps to characterize her desire to quit working for Mrs. Cullinan, her resistance to the discrimination that she puts up with while she works, and the fact that Mrs. Cullinan changed the names of her servants and workers for her convenience. So, the language used by Angelou in Chapter 16 in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings clearly characterizes Angelou’s younger self, and the society that she†¦show more content†¦Cullinan did not ever insult Angelou by using any of the derogatory names or use her actual name until she broke her china dishes. When Mrs. Cullinan uses Angelou’s real name, she was trying to reaffirm her h old and influence on her, like when parents call their kids by their middle names. And because of being called out of name and getting her real name back, Angelou stops working for Mrs. Cullinan. Another example of the language characterizing society is that the language shows that the blacks weren’t helpless against racism. Between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, blacks were being stripped from their rights, since it was illegal for them to be slaves. But the blacks did fight this, and so did Angelou. When she was mistreated by Mrs. Cullinan when she worked for her, she showed her feelings of aggression, with the following events that describe the china breaking: Then Bailey solved my dilemma†¦I kept his instructions in mind, so on the next day when Miss Glory was hanging out clothes and I had again been told to serve the old biddies on the porch, I dropped the empty serving tray. When I heard Mrs. Cullinan scream â€Å"Mary!† I picked up the casserole and two of the green glass cups in readiness. As she rounded the kitchen door, I let them fall on the tiled floor. Constitutional Challenge A Missed Opportunity

Question: Describe about the Constitutional Challenge: A Missed Opportunity? Answer: 377a Homosexuality has been a matter of concern as well as a matter of taboo that the whole world is dealing with. Some parts of the law find no harm or nothing wrong with homosexuality that is a man being with a man as a partner, or a woman being with a woman. But the concern over here remains the marriage between two people who belong to the same sex, i.e. the gay marriages and the lesbian marriages. What needs to be dealt with is when the law interferes with the orientation with the people. Where there are places where it is made legal, there are others who believing in nullifying these kinds of marriages, and the point which is avoided is this does not stand in accordance with the equality where man and woman are said to be equal. Penal Codes given section, 377a, is something which has to be discussed and defined first. Before, the Penal Codes section 377 was the only one that existed which said that if there were people who were found having sexual intercourse which the nature has not permitted, whether it be a man or a woman, or either caught in this kind of sexual act with animals, will be liable to pay a fine as decided by the law, or maybe imprisonment which can extend more than 10 years. it was repealed further with an amendment which took place in the Penal Code back in 2007 and something new was added section 377A was retained and it said that if a person belonging to the male gender was caught indulging in acts of gross indecency with other people, or in fact any such act was liable to get punishments, which can be either less than two years or two years maximum (J.F., 2014).starting from the 2010, where the first official case relating to homosexuality was filed, that moment had given birth to the de bate which would be continued till the time the people who have orientations get their rights. Ho Peng Keep who happens to be an associate professor, a given minister, does not support homosexuality either. He had clearly said that the country that they live in does not follow the tradition which would approve of homosexuality or permit two people to have sexual relations of any kinds, because this is nothing but indecent. Hence this minister believes that the law which makes homosexuality a crime should not be removed from the code which is the main thing governing all aspects here. The higher authorities of the country were not in favor of homosexuality nor will they ever be(Lum, 2014). The orthodox nature and the thoughts which happen to be conservative do not allow the laws to give the permit of constitutionality to matters like homosexuality. When homosexuality is discussed, the people who support it go ahead and make statements which want an explanation as to how this rule does not defy the law which states that all the people are equal irrespective of the gender or their background. When argued with this the court refused to take up the connection which can normally be labeled under the term legal and tried to avoid the matter(Smith, 2013). Law is what governs the country, and when it says no to something, the country cannot be alright with the idea of something, it can be taken for granted that such matters will have not got the light they want easily. Homosexuality is something which is taken to be unethical and the acts which has been committed under th e term homosexuality is nothing but indecent. Any debate will always have two sides, where one side would be for and the other one would be against. This situation is somewhat similar. There are authorities who would never approve of this thing being something which would not be legalized, and at the same time there are homosexuals who will obviously try and support this term and try to get their rights equal in the eyes of law. The law of this country that we are talking about does not agree with the terms which were taken out to the court by the couple who thought they could actually get some help from law, their names being, Kenneth Chee and Gary who are a homosexual couples . Apex court where appeal of any kind could have been produced hereby decided that there is country where this kind of homosexuality is banned and, the given laws are pretty much constitutional and do not make any deterrence with the rights of the humans laid down in the constitution in the very beginning(Tan, 2014), many pleas and appeals have been dismissed by the judges of the courts. It isnt something which is inside the scope of the articles which has been brought up in the cases, the scope being the given Article 12, that no unjust action should be executed on any given ground whether it is the sex of the person, the gender, the caste or the creed or religion, within the scope of 377a and the sections mentioned. Justices said it can be understood, what a person might be feeling but there is nothing in the law that can help these people. They cannot be helped, because what the laws have laid down is the ultimatum, and law happens to be the greatest and the authority which has to be kept in mind.(Ram, 2014). This is something that they believe is right and therefore nothing can be done which will make the authorities take down this particular section of the law. This kind of decision has obviously shocked a lot of people all over the world, because unjust nature of law can be depicted from the decision which has been made(Miller, 2014) after which the lawyer who was in favor of this has agreed to continue fighting who are being subjected to inequality under this particular section and the law. Moreover this, according to many common people and activists makes people with different sexual orientation unsafe in the country, and when everything about the country is so perfect, but a step towards a broader thought which would have resulted in the betterment of this country, this opportunity has been missed by the country. Ray tracing Essays

Ray tracing Essays Ray tracing Essay Ray tracing Essay The objective of this experiment is to find the length of an object and its focal lengths. I will first try to hypothesize where the length points will be. The given results of my hypothesized diagrams will determine the lengths of the focal points. I will then be able to find out where the object image will be situated by following my ray trace diagrams. I believe that I will be able to find the length of the object image if I can find the two focal length points ( 1/v and 1/u displayed in my ray trace diagrams and the focal graph). To achieve this I have decided that I could not get an accurate hypothesis if I did not know this information, so I will carry out a small practical experiment. We found that if the lens is thin, the focal length is longer, and if it is thicker, the focal length is smaller. The focal length for our lens is 10cm. I have created some ray tracing diagrams to show my predicted lengths using the focal length that I found. I have found the longest distance that I can get a clear image is 100cm, the shortest being 15cm. I then carried out an experiment to prove my hypothesis. I used light boxes to create a light source, but this is not extremely accurate as the light rays diverge and are not parallel. I used a screen and a lens to try to find an image. My results for my experiment were as follows. I had three atempts to make my experiment more accurate. Image lens Lens Screen Image size (cm) 1st/2nd/3rd attempt (cm) 1st/2nd/3rd attempt (mm) 15 33/35/36.5 25/28/29 25 18/18/18.5 9/9/9 40 15/14/15 5/5/4 50 14/13.5/13.5 3/3/3.5 60 13.5/13/13.5 2.5/2.5/2.5 80 12.5/12.5/12.5 1/1/1.5 100 12/12/12.5 1/1/1 I have found the averages of the 3 attempts and have also put these in a table. Image lens Lens Screen Image size (cm) Average(to 2dp, cm) Average (to 1dp, mm) 15 34.80 27.3 25 18.17 9 40 14.67 4.7 50 13.67 3.2 60 13.33 2.5 80 12.50 1.3 100 12.17 1 This data is represented in a graph. It shows that the longer you move the object to the lens away, the less distance between the screen to the lens is needed to get a clear image. The further the object to the lens is the smaller the image size. The only problems that I had with my experiment were the fact that the light rays were not perfectly parallel. This could of lead to the rays moving away from the focal points, and could then move the object image a few millimeters, which could change the results by a lot. The other problem was the materials. These were not of a high quality, and the measuring devices we used were 1 meter rulers, which were not accurate enough to the millimeter. We also did not know what thickness the lenses were, so we could not go into further detail into the changes, which they may have caused. Overall the experiment was a success. It showed basically what my raytracing diagrams, and my hypothesis had shown. It gave a clear, precise trend on how the lengths change. Changing with size it shows the further you pull the object from the lens, the shorter length you have to put the lens from the screen.

Network topology design & layout Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Network topology design & layout - Essay Example The company will also need two WWW servers so that one is for its internal management and another for external users. Furthermore, a mail server will also be crucial in this case. For the sake of ABC company security, it is crucial that outsiders should not gain access to the internal CVS or internal WWW servers whatsoever. For a start-up open source software company as the company ABC, it would be a great challenge to fully implement an effectively secured network. In this study we therefore purpose to realize the company with the above specifications. Below is a graphical representation of the network design layout. It is very risky running an entire company on a personal computer. The ABC Company needs to watch over servers that handle the web based systems with advanced expertise. Such servers in this case include CVS and WWW servers. In terms of security assumptions, it is important for the company to make its security appear good as argued by Cheswick et al (2003) that this is enough to deter attackers. It is also important to make simple security arrangement since complex things are harder to comprehend and might even be nightmare to their designer (Cheswick et al, 2003, pp.5). For a young company as ABC, it would be inappropriate to use huge security-sensitive programs because in most cases such programs have acted as sources of security problems. Furthermore, the companys network designer must keep security assumptions in mind and see to it that the security is an integral part of the original design. Let us begin by considering this typical policy: Internal users are trusted, and with permitted Internet access they are able to initiate ongoing TCP connections, issue DNS queries, be able to run ping trace-route and set their clock aided by external time server (Cheswick et al, 2003, pp.5). Secondly, the outsiders should not be able to initiate access to the internal world.
